In general, we all want to improve our health and be the best versions of ourselves, but sometimes it can be difficult to figure out exactly how to do so. That is where S.M.A.R.T. goals can be useful, as this model is designed to help set and accomplish effective goals, including those pertaining to your health and wellbeing. Let’s explore how S.M.A.R.T. goals can help you improve your health:

1. Keep Your Goals Specific

The first part of S.M.A.R.T. goals is the “S,” which stands for “Specific.” It is best to set specific health goals so that you can focus directly on whatever aspects of your health you are trying to improve. For instance, if you are trying to build better sleep habits, you can try setting specific goals about when you will go to bed and how you will limit distractions in the bedroom. When your goals are specific, it is easier to hold yourself to them!

2. Measure Your Progress

The “M” in S.M.A.R.T. stands for “Measurable.” This means that it is better to set goals that you can directly measure and evaluate your progress compared to more loose goals that are hard to measure. When you set goals that can be clearly measured, it promotes self-accountability as well as allows you to feel good when you are keeping up with your goals.

3. Strive for Attainable Results

The “A” in S.M.A.R.T. stands for “Attainable,” because if you set goals that are too lofty, you may fall short and end up feeling discouraged. While aiming high can be a great thing when setting goals, it is important to keep your goals realistic so that you can accomplish them with hard work. And remember, you can always raise your goals over time as you meet the initial goals you set!

4. Use Relevant Strategies

The “R” in S.M.A.R.T. stands for “Relevant,” as it is important to set goals that are directly related to the aspect of your health you wish to improve. For instance, if you want to build endurance, you will not meet your goals by only doing weight training. You should carefully consider what you wish to accomplish and set goals that are relevant to your area of focus.

5. Accomplish Goals in a Timely Manner

Finally, the “T” in S.M.A.R.T. stands for “Time-Based.” When you set goals that are tied to certain amounts of time, it promotes accountability and keeps you on track with your progress. For example, if your goal is to exercise every day, you might structure it like this: “I will exercise at least 3 days per week this month, 4 days per week next month, and so on until I am exercising every day.” This goal clearly defines what you are expecting of yourself and when it should be accomplished, allowing you to stick to your goals and achieve better results.

When you utilize S.M.A.R.T. goals as part of your process to improve your health, you can set yourself up for the best chances of succeeding.
